Doctor Xu is now a lecturer in Newcastle, UK. He focuses on intelligent engineering applications guided by human factors, such as eye fixation locations recommendation for safe driving by measuring the perceptual blindness, drowsiness, depth perception, visual comfort zone and response patterns between old and novice drivers. He is also active in user end experience research, such as the improvement of user viewing experience on 3D guided by human stereo vision. His growing interests focus on health and social care inspired by human pathological risk factors.
The primary goal of this course is to understand how human-computer machine interacts, and how human factors affect the daily driving tasks at perceptual and cognitive levels, and how this visual information processing is unitised in everyday activities. This course will discuss several human factors in driving, such as depth perception, motion perception, human visual attention and computational visual attention model, perceptual blindness, driving safety. Three research topics will be provided during this course, which is Driving Safety Guided by Human Factors, Mimic Human Visual Attention in Driving Guided by Human Factors, and Improve Driver’s Viewing Experience Guided by Stereo Vision. This requires the basic knowledge from human perception, for example, human vision and audition, driving safety, and programming ability to generate different kinds of visual stimuli by using the software. Besides, the students are encouraged to participant in the eye tracking study to collect and analyse the eye movement under different driving conditions. The final aim of this course is to inspire the students to complete their research independently in human factors.
